This Friday, November 21, is our monthly meeting being held in the Roy Smith Theatre on the main campus. The meeting begins at 8:00 pm followed by our speaker Dr. David Williams from Arizona State University. His presentation is about Psyche, the largest metallic type asteroid in the Solar System. It will be visited by a robotic mission developed by Arizona State University. This mission will explore one of the few remaining types of unexplored worlds in our Solar System. Following the meeting at 10:00 pm join us at the William Miller Sperry Observatory for refreshments and the chance to look through two of the largest telescopes in the North East (weather permitting).

The Legacy Survey of Space and Time is about the newly-completed Simonyi Telescope at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile and the how the huge amount of data will be managed. This presentation will cover the role of sky surveys in astronomy, Vera C. Rubin and the existence of dark matter, the Simonyi Telescope at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile, the observing plan for the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and managing petabyes of data. Announcing “Four Centuries in a Weekend” – Sperry Observatory will be open on Saturday October 18 and Sunday, October 19 from 12- 5:00 pm for the “Four Centuries in a Weekend” history event. Come spend the weekend at Sperry during this annual Union County celebration of historic houses and sites. Sperry will be hosting tours and Amateur Astronomers, Inc. members will be available to answer your astronomy questions. We will also be distributing gently-used astronomy and science-related books, magazines and posters that were donated for this purpose. This is a free daytime event. There is ample parking onsite and we gladly welcome all visitors. Titan is the only moon in the solar system with a thick atmosphere and surface liquid which resembles early Earth. Scheduled for 2028, NASA’s Dragonfly Mission will explore Titan with a drone. This presentation is by our guest speaker, Dr. Joey Pasterski from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Learn about Titan from a member of its scientific team this Friday, October 17. The Autumn of 2025 will be a busy one. Comets are coming! Join us for a discussion of how and where to see these new objects this season! And talk to members of AAI who are always willing to share their knowledge of astronomy. Also join us for “Four Centuries in a Weekend” on Saturday and Sunday, October 18 and 19.
