The Vera Rubin Observatory is the newest international astrophysical facility to open. It can gather more data each night than all other Earthbound telescopes put together. Already, a number of groundbreaking observations have been obtained with this amazing telescope. Hear about its technology, capabilities, and its latest scientific results, and find out how you can be part of the observatory’s ten-year science mission: the Legacy Survey of Space and Time. Join us in the Roy Smith Theater at 8:00 pm followed by observing after the meeting at 10:00 pm in Sperry Observatory

What could the future of space missions have been if we had taken a different direction in the approach to space travel? This presentation will talk about projects that almost changed how we travel to space, such as nuclear powered rockets. Join us this Friday, September 12, to find out. And talk to members of AAI who are always willing to share their knowledge of astronomy.

It’s September and the beginning of another school year. It’s also the start of a new month which means it’s time to find out what is in the sky during this month. On the first Friday of each month AAI presents “What’s Up: A Down to Earth Sky Guide”. This presentation informs you of what you can see in the night sky during the current month. Join us this Friday, September 5, to find out what constellations, Moon phases, planets and more will be visible. And maybe hear about some space mission news too. And talk to members of AAI who are always willing to share their knowledge of astronomy.

Getting to land astronauts to land on the Moon safely in a spacecraft was one of many objectives of the Apollo Moon Missions back in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Another involved training the astronauts about the geology of the Moon and determine which rocks to bring back to Earth for future study was another. Join us on Friday, July 18, to learn what training was needed for the Apollo astronauts in geology. And talk to members of AAI who are always willing to share their knowledge of astronomy.
