Controlled Environment Agriculture: Food for Space – Join us at our monthly meeting held in the Roy Smith Theatre on Union College’s Cranford campus beginning at 8:00 pm on February 21. Our guest speaker is Dr. Matthew Pickens from NASA’s Kennedy Space Flight Center. Controlled Environment Agriculture is used to grow crops in extreme environments ranging from urban areas to the depths of space. It has fed astronauts on board the International Space Station and will feed explorers going to the Moon and Mars. Then on February 28, join us in Sperry Observatory at 8:30 pm for a presentation titled “The Modern Search for Planet X”. This deals with current efforts to try to locate a theoretical large planet far beyond Pluto. The talk will cover the people and techniques being used to probe this vast area of space for an unknown world or worlds – if it/they exists. Both presentations are open to the public. And learn about our upcoming Astronomy Day being held on Saturday, May 17, 2025!

“Hearts in Space – A Celestial Valentine” – What an interesting title. What will this be about? Join us for a quick history of how a two-lobed shape became a symbol of love, how heart-shaped objects are found everywhere, how human hearts beat differently in space and could solar flares be bad (or good?) for astronauts’ health. So, come to Sperry Observatory for an interesting and informative evening. Talk to members of AAI who are always willing to share their knowledge of astronomy. And learn about our upcoming Astronomy Day being held on Saturday, May 17, 2025!

“What’s Up: A down to Earth Sky Guide” – It’s the first Friday of the month. What does that mean? It’s time for our monthly presentation on what you can see in the sky for the current month. Join us as we learn what planets, constellations, possible meteor showers, Moon phases and more will be visible in the February night sky. And there may be some space news too! This presentation is given in an educational, fun and easy to understand format for most ages. So, come to Sperry Observatory for an interesting and informative evening. “Exploring New Frontiers: Summer as a High School NASA Intern” – Ever wonder what types of internships that high school students can apply for to advance their knowledge of science, technology, engineering and math? Join us on January 31 at Sperry Observatory at 8:30 pm for a presentation from one of our members who attended a NASA internship in 2024. Hear about her experiences and what she learned during her time as a NASA intern. This was such an exciting opportunity that both high school students and the public at large may want to hear about. Talk to members of AAI who are always willing to share their knowledge of astronomy. And learn about our upcoming Astronomy Day being held on Saturday, May 17, 2025!

“Moon Time – The Proposal to Establish Time Zones on the Moon” – Time Zones on the Moon? What is that all about? Given NASA’s plans for the Artemis Missions to return humans to the Moon, there may be a need to have time zones set up to help the astronauts live and work in a structured environment. Join us as we learn about this interesting concept and what the potential plans could be for establishing time zones on the Moon. The presentation is given in an educational and easy to understand format for most ages. Talk to members of AAI who are always willing to share their knowledge of astronomy. The Hunt for Life on Mars – Humanity is fascinated with the possibility of finding life on Mars. It is known that Mars was once more earthlike, and there are tantalizing clues that water may still exist there. Theories even suggest that life traveled from Mars and seeded the Earth. Joins us this Friday, January 17 at 8:00 pm in the Roy Smith Theater on the campus of Union College to learn about what potential discoveries have been made regarding the possibility if life on Mars. Our guest speaker, John Fontana, is a NASA Solar System Ambassador. Then after the meeting at 10:00 PM we open Sperry Observatory for observing and meeting and talking to members of AAI.

“Update: The Exploration of the Red Planet: Mars” – This month the planet Mars will be at opposition – that is it will be directly opposite to the Sun in the night sky. And it will appear highest in the night sky at around midnight. So much exploration has been done on this planet. Mars has volcanoes, dry river beds, dust devils and intriguing Ice! Join us on Friday, January 10, at 8:30 pm at Sperry Observatory to learn what has been discovered so far and what may lie ahead in future explorations!
